About The Project
The Growly Darks is a tabletop role playing game designed to be accessible to both young players (tween, young adult) and people with Dyscalculia, ADD, ADHD and other forms of neuro-diversity.
At it’s heart is a dice mechanic that is mental arithmetic free, using physically picking up and sliding around numberless dice.
(you can also play with a handful of regular d6, polyhedral or fudge dice instead- you assign hits to around 60% of the faces, and misses to the rest- for example, if you use D6 four faces are hits, two are misses. On a d10, 1-6 hit, 7-0 miss. If you like fudge dice, the four plus and minus symbols are hits, the blanks are misses).
Other features include…
Using only single digit numbers wherever possible. Writing numbers as words instead of numerals.
Dice counted as shaded pips- always in blocks of 3. e,g (ooo ooo ooo)
Keeping text blocks short and to the point.
Text is san serif and larger print for visually impaired.
Highlighting keywords to allow skim reading for ADD, ADHD.
Illustrating rules examples with exciting sequential comic panels.
Show don’t tell. Every weapon and item has a picture with info and rules next to it. Equipment pages are walls of pictures!
1 dice = 1 damage- so you can place them on slots to track damage without having to count or use numbers.
My rule is streamline, never dumb-down. Basic core rules are simple, but the book has expandable rules to load players with only what the individuals can handle.
Sections are color coded and have symbols for quick reference.
Decimal coin system- so 10 copper = 1 silver. 10 silver = 1 gold etc. Printable coins come with the game for physically tracking money.
Rules feature easily remembered formula and patterns. For example- armour, weapons and magic wands costs 1 gold per dice benefit it gives you,
The kickstarter
The kickstarter is for the first book in the series, which is the core rules. Esentially the players handbook, but it also contains a little section for games masters, a little monster section, a short world setting section and a chapter of advanced optional rules.
The book is B5 standard american graphic novel size.
